Kiwanis recognize heroes

The Sammamish Kiwanis Club celebrated and honored two young men recently with the club’s Everyday Hero Award.

“The Sammamish Kiwanis Club simultaneously honored two 16-year-old young men with Everyday Hero Awards in recognition of their quick, selfless actions that resulted in saving the lives of a fellow classmate and a friend,” Kiwanis President Nicky Beedle wrote in a press release.

“John Piela guided a drowning friend to safety while swimming in Rattlesnake Lake last summer. Thanks to John’s clear-headed approach and calm coaching, both he and the exhausted, flailing swimmer arrived safely back on shore with only a bruised ego to show for the near-death experience.”

“In a separate incident, John Sanders saved a schoolmate from going into a potentially fatal episode of diabetic shock by recognizing the trouble signs, asking crucial questions and reacting swiftly,” Beedle said.

“Mr. Sander’s wise move to secure and administer sugared food and assistance until his friend’s health stabilized and the crisis averted made the difference between life and the unthinkable.”

The Kiwanis meet at 7 a.m. on Thursdays at Sammamish Hills Lutheran Church, 22818 S.E. Eighth St. in Redmond.
