Varas, VanGrunsven both advance to state tennis tournament

Eastlake's Vicente Varas clinched the District 2, No. 1 seed to the 4A state tennis tournament on Oct. 29, beating Skyline's Tyler VanGrunsven 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at the University of Washington's Nordstrom Center.

VanGrunsven battled back the following day to defeat Mountain View's Aaron Blevins to earn the District 2, No. 2 seed to state.

The Newport doubles team of Steven Miyauchi and Zach Chen defeated Garfield's Wilson Platt and Matt Cerf 6-2, 6-2 for the district title and a state berth.

The 4A state tournament takes place May 28-29, 2010 at the Tri-City Court Club and Kamiakin High School in Kennewick.
