The wintery blast that swept across the greater Seattle area last week provided students with extended winter breaks, and caused headaches for commuters. It also had a huge impact on the high school sports scene. When the Issaquah and Lake Washington School districts on Wednesday cancelled classes for the rest of the week, all after-school events were postponed. Area high schools, including Issaquah, Skyline, Eastlake, Eastside Catholic and Liberty were forced to cancel basketball, wrestling, swimming and gymnastics events. After another heavy blast of snow Sunday, all events scheduled to take place Monday and Tuesday were cancelled, including Issaquah and Skyline basketball games. “We are going to have to get back together soon because we’re going to have a whole block of games to reschedule,” said Issaquah Athletic Director Mike Bailey. Between the five area schools, there were 32 varsity events postponed or cancelled between Dec. 17 and 23. Only one contest, the Skyline-Garfield boys basketball game, was rescheduled as of press time. The game, which was supposed to take place on Dec. 22 was moved to 7:30 p.m., Jan. 10 at Skyline High School.
