U.S. Senior Open tournament officially underway at Sahalee

After three days of taking notes and adjusting to the 100-foot cedar trees of Sahalee Country Club, the star-studded field in the 2010 U.S. Senior Open teed off this morning in a quest for a championship.

The trio of Ocean Shores' Jerry Johnson — one of four competitors from Washington — Martin Rifkin and Kim Dolan got the qualifying round started at 7:15 a.m.

Three golfers withdrew from the tournament earlier this week, including marquee names Nick Price and Paul Azinger — both with foot injuries — along with Tom Pernice Jr.

There are still plenty of large names in the field, including honorary chairman and local favorite, Fred Couples. Other senior golfers highlighting the list including 2009 champion Fred Funk, Tom Kite, Bernhard Langer, Mark O’Meara, Fuzzy Zoeller, Tom Watson and Jay Haas.

The qualifying round will continue Friday, with the championship rounds set to take place Saturday and Sunday.

For local fans without tickets, the tournament can be viewed on ESPN2 from 2 to 6 p.m., today, and from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday on NBC.
