Iwicki wins third straight freestyle title

Eastside Catholic freshman Matt Iwicki captured his third consecutive Washington State Wrestling Association freestyle state championship at Centralia High School, winning the 120 pound weight class over Brian Burchett of Seabeck.

Iwicki took his first two matches by pin before outlasting Timothy Martinez and then Butchett in the finals.

The win puts Iwicki on the Washington Cadet All-Star team that will compete in Daytona Beach, Fla. in June.

Newcastle Running Club awards three scholarships

Annie Trumbull of Liberty has been awarded a $1,400 scholarship from Newcastle Running Club.

The scholarships were awarded to three high school seniors that reside in Newcastle or attend Liberty or Hazen high schools and was based on GPA, college board exam scores, financial need, an essay and community involvement.

The funds for the scholarships came from proceeds from the 2011 Newcastle 5K Run/Walk. A student from Hazen and another from Interlake were the other two recipients.

Skyline grad headed to Taiwan with college basketball team

Christy Cofano, a 2011 Skyline graduate and basketball player with Chapman University, will be part of a group headed to Taiwan in July to represent the United States at an International basketball showcase.

The event will feature six teams from India, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
