Hunger documentary “A Place at the Table” shows at Mary, Queen of Peace Thursday night

Sammamish Mayor Tom Odell will be part of a community discussion on hunger at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church following a showing of the documentary “A Place at the Table.”

The movie approaches the issue of food insecurity in the United States and asserts nearly 50 million Americans do not have stable self-reliant access to food: a figure that translates to a sixth of the overall population and a fourth of children.

Directors Kristi Jacobsen and Lori Silverbush make their argument through vignettes of U.S. adults and children living on few calories, empty calories or only with the help of federal and charitable assistance. Contributors include actor Jeff Bridges, journalist Raj Patel and celebrity chef Tom Colicchio.

The showing will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and is part of Eastside’s Month of Concern for the Hungry, running from Sept. 14 to Oct. 5. Volunteers will collect food donations at Sammamish grocery stores each Saturday through the campaign’s end, and donation drop off points are open throughout the city.
