The Lakeside Recovery Senior Legion team started the 35th annual Brandy Pugh Memorial Tournament with a bang Wednesday night, beating Bellevue Honda 9-2.

The local group of baseball players from Issaquah, Skyline and Newport high schools broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a seven-run rally.

Jake Bakamus was 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Brandon Mahovlich was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Aaron Sandefur was 2-for-3.

Connor Lawhead earned the victory on the mound, allowing no earned runs, five hits, while striking out seven over a complete seven innings.

Lakeside, which broke a five-game losing streak, improved to 16-16 overall. They are scheduled to face the Twin City Titans at 8 p.m., tonight at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.

There are 12 teams from around the state competing in the Brandy Pugh tournament, which runs through July 11.
