The day after Christmas, the city of Sammamish thanked community members who volunteered their time to preserve the Plateau’s native landscapes.
Under the city’s official volunteer program, city staff connect with interested citizens to combine forces on projects like native plant salvage, invasive plant removal and native flora planting. These projects typically occur on Saturdays, but have taken a hiatus during the holiday season.
The letter from Sammamish staff noted that in fall 2014 alone, volunteers planted more than 1,355 native trees and shrubs.
Volunteer events will resume on Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 19, when staff and volunteers will plant native trees and shrubs in the Lower Commons wetland.
