Fleming school to bring ‘sound of music’ to Dogwood Street

If music had a color, at Fleming School of Music, that color might be green.

If music had a color, at Fleming School of Music, that color might be green.

The Issaquah-based piano and guitar school will open next week in a newly redone, “green renovated” location just off Front Street.

“We’re really proud of what we’re doing and eager to be in downtown Issaquah,” said Diana Fleming, who runs the school with her daughter, Lynette Sloan.

The school was founded in 1972 in Kent, later operating in Bellevue and most recently in Issaquah. In addition to guitar and piano, Fleming and Sloan teach music theory and performance classes, and also offer summer camps and workshops. They teach all ages and levels of experience.

“I love the students,” Fleming said. “Music is something that you can do your whole life, and it’s good for cognitive learning.”

“We teach them to conceptualize music and to understand it,” she continued. “We teach skills for life. And, we have fun — we have so much fun.

The new 1,600-square-foot music school, at 365 Dogwood St., is in a revamped home.

“The place is darling. It’s just perfect,” Fleming said.

Fleming, Sloan and their contractor, Jordan Valente Construction, came up with a plan to recycle many of the materials in the home, including carpet, cabinets, furniture and more. They installed energy-efficient windows, furnace and water heater and used other methods.

“We want our footprint to be as small as possible,” Fleming said. “We also soundproofed the building. … We are not going to infringe on the neighborhood.”

She said she’s quite excited to have the new school located in the Gilman cultural area, within walking distance of theaters and other arts venues.

The new space will allow the school to expand a bit eventually, to give private lessons to up to five students at once, group lessons, small recitals and other events, Fleming said.

One of the school’s biggest aims and accomplishments is community service work. Students from the school perform often at assisted living facilities, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, wedding ceremonies and other events. Students from the school also often play accompaniment for high school soloists.

The school also offers the National Music Certification Examination Program and offers college credit to Bellevue Community College students.
