New home construction is a common sight in the Issaquah Highlands, but artEAST’s third annual Rookery Project is taking home building to a whole new level.

Co-sponsored by the Issaquah Highlands Council, the Rookery Nest Project will bring together several community groups to construct human-sized nests in the Highlands’ Village Green Park. The project will take place July 14-17, with a preview event scheduled for Friday, July 11 at artEAST in downtown Issaquah. The project culminates at Art Outside Highlands Day, an annual community festival from 3-7 p.m. July 20 at Village Green Park in the Issaquah Highlands.

“People come into the project claiming they’re not artists,” said Karen White, a Kirkland-based sculptor who has led nest installations throughout the Pacific Northwest and is coordinating the Rookery Nest Project. “They are amazed at what they can create from the natural materials all around them.”
