Issaquah AAUW honors STEM scholars from local high schools

Nine female students from Skyline, Issaquah, and Liberty high schools were honored on April 19 at Timber Ridge at Talus in Issaquah. Across the state of Washington, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) recognizes over 400 juniors each year for their excellence in science, technology, or mathematics.

Over 60 people attended the ceremony and reception. The honorees introduced their families and answered questions about their interests, goals, and future plans. Each of the young women received a certificate and gift to recognize their achievement.

Honorees from Skyline High School were Gianna Franzi (science), Macy Scott (math), and Elizabeth Weir (technology). Honorees from Issaquah High School were Lauren Campbell (science), Sayaka Kenmochi (math), and Delaney Lewis (technology). Honorees from Liberty High School were Helen Le (technology), Karinn Sytsma (science), and Sarah Stucky (math).

AAUW supports equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. In addition to the STEM Scholars Recognition, the Issaquah Branch provides scholarships for rising 8th grade girls to attend the Tech Trek WA camp each summer. Campers are immersed in STEM education and activities for a week. At least two of the STEM honorees have applied to be counselors at Tech Trek in 2018. The branch also funds two $1000 scholarships for Bellevue College students who are returning to school and studying STEM fields.
