Intiman Theatre and the Sammamish Arts Commission invite residents to a free Front Porch Theater reading of excerpts from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter” on Thursday, Oct. 7 at the Sammamish Public Library beginning at 7 p.m.

Hawthorne’s protagonist, Hester Prynne, is one of the central female characters in American literature. In Naomi Lizuka’s adaptation of the classic novel, participants will see what the subjugation of identity costs both Hester and her community, and they’ll come to understand what that suppression means for all women who are forced to understand they have no voice.

Sammamish Council Member John Curley is the featured reader, but there are also opportunities for select audience members to be “cast” in the production. Even if you don’t want to read, all viewers are encouraged to participate in the post-reading discussion of how the book’s themes still resonate today.

All audience members will also be entered into a drawing for two tickets to the Intiman Theatre’s performance of The Scarlet Letter.

Additional information is available on the Intiman Theatre website.
