Anytime Fitness to open in Klahanie Shopping Center

A new 24-hour fitness center is slated to open in the Klahanie Shopping Center sometime in the next few months.

A new 24-hour fitness center is slated to open in the Klahanie Shopping Center sometime in the next few months.

Anytime Fitness, a worldwide franchise with more than 2,700 locations, will replace Klahanie Fitness.

Anytime Fitness owner David Tilton secured his lease for the now-empty location in January. He plans on opening after completely renovating the 6,000-square-foot space to meet national Anytime Fitness standards.

“It’s going to be a nice, new club — a good fitness center,” Tilton said.

Tilton expects renovations will cost about $250,000.

The facility will include, among others, traditional cardio machines, free weights and a fitness room where members will have access to more than 400 workout videos.

The gym will provided scheduled classes featuring courses like zumba or yoga. Members can also sign up for a personal trainer.

Member fees have not been determined yet, but they will be comparable to other gyms, Tilton said.

Anytime Fitness members will have access to the gym 24-hours a day. Members will use RFID cards to access the facilities after business hours, when staff are not present.

Video cameras will be prevalent on site; a panic button will be installed in case of emergencies, Tilton said. Safety is a high priority.

This is the first Anytime Fitness to open in the area.

“They’ll be a great asset for the community,” said John Waters, the managing principal of the Gerrity Group, which acquired the Klahanie Shopping Center in 2011.

The previous tenant, Klahanie Fitness, had operated on a month-to-month basis, Waters said.

Gerrity Group had looked at filling the space located off of Klahanie Drive Southeast with a daycare center or an Ace Hardware.

“In the end, I think the community wants a fitness center out there,” he said.

Tilton expects to employ about three staffers to start with; some former Klahanie Fitness employees have already reached out to Tilton, expressing their interest in the job.

“I just hope we’ll be welcomed by the community,” he said.
