Eastside Fire and Rescue is using National Boat Safety Week, May 17-23, to wear life jackets consistently each time they are on the water.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in almost three-fourths of the recreational boating fatalities in 2012, and that 85 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. According to an EFR news release, life jackets should be U.S. Coast Guard approved and appropriate for the intended water activity. Also, proper fit is important; life jackets meant for adults do not work for children. EFR adds that people should buy a life jacket for a child to “grow into.”

On another topic, EFR notes that alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents and that drinking while boating is like drinking while driving a motor vehicle.

Boaters also need to check the weather, know the latest marine weather forecast prior to going out and keep a regular check in changing conditions.
