County may cut funding to local parks

Interim King County Executive Kurt Triplett announced Thursday that major cuts for the county are coming in order to deal with the $56 million operating budget deficit for 2010.

According to the executive’s Web site budgeting priorities will be public health and regional criminal justice services, including the prosecutor, jail, courts, public defense, as well as the sheriff.

Triplett said other areas, such as parks will see deep cuts, if any at all for parks in the unincorporated portions of the county, as well as animal control. The plan is part of Triplett’s proposed $15 million cuts to the county.

There are 39 parks in unincorporated King County, seven of which are in the Issaquah and Sammamish areas, along with various trail heads. All of those 39 parks are scheduled to be mothballed, according to the King County executive’s office, beginning in January.

According to the Web site due to limited regional funding available, as every organization feels the burn of budget cuts, the proposed county cuts will likely eliminate all remaining discretionary services.

Proposed cuts to the county’s budget will be presented to the King County Council at the end of September.
