The barricade on 42nd Street in Sammamish was badly damaged Tuesday night when an intoxicated driver crashed into it.

As a result, the gate no longer works properly and firetrucks and other emergency vehicles are unable to open it electronically. Until repairs are made, the city has decided to keep the gate open so emergency personnel will have full access to nearby homes.

King County crews will be at the site today or tomorrow to assess the damage and give an estimate on how long it will take to make the repairs.

The decision to keep the gate open for a short time will have no bearing on the city’s formal connectivity process and long-term barricade evaluation. Everything will be back to normal along 42nd Street as soon as the repairs are made. The intoxicated driver responsible for this damage has been cited for a DUI and a hit-and-run violation.
