Students from Eastlake High School placed fourth in the Washington State University Imagine Tomorrow competition May 29-31 in Pullman.

The team was one of 186 to compete in the event. Other teams from the Lake Washington School District included the International Community School in Kirkland and Tesla STEM High School in Redmond.

The Tesla STEM school took home more than $30,000 in prize money, winning six out of the 16 prizes awarded to students.

Imagine Tomorrow asked students in grades 9-12 to address the topic of renewable energy in any of four challenges: biofuels, technology, behavior or design. Teams came from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

Biofuels Challenge

First place: Tesla STEM High School – “Cellulosic Ethanol: A New Look at the Transition to Renewable Energy.” Each of the five students won $1,000 plus $5,000 for their school. The five students will go to Washington, D.C., to meet Dr. Ernest Moniz, Secretary of Energy, and Washington Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray.

Fourth place: Eastlake High School – “Yeast DNA Splicing.” Each student won $250 plus $1,000 for the school.

Technology Challenge

First place: Tesla STEM High School – “Reimagining the Electric Car.” Each student won $1,000 plus $5,000 for the school.

Second place: Tesla STEM High School – “Step On Carbon.” Each student won $750 plus $3,000 for the school.

Third place: Tesla STEM High School – “Solar Light Tower.” Each student won $500 plus $1,500 for the school.

Design Challenge

Fourth place: Tesla STEM High School – “EDGES.” Each student won $250 plus $1,000 for the school.

Best Project, Newly Participating School

Winner: International Community School – “One Volt Closer to the Future: The Power of Project-Based Analysis.”
