Eastlake High School seniors Alethea Hilliker and Ian Drummond were recognized for their commitment to their studies and their community, and demonstrating integrity and character that won the praise of their teachers and peers.

Hilliker has had several medical issues which have required hospitalization this year, but did not let this stop her from succeeding in her senior year. With the ability to succeed in the face of adversity, Hilliker was proactive in communicating with her teachers and with her counselor to keep up on assignments and tests.

Her career goal is to become an emergency room physician, and has worked hard in school toward that goal.

Hilliker attended the National Youth Leadership Medical Forum at Georgetown University where she observed open heart surgery and a knee replacement, which solidified her passion to be a medical doctor. She is also a member of the Community Emergency Response Team, and community and public aid is something she has a strong passion for. Her long-term goal is to be involved in medical issues of developing countries.

Ian Drummond was recognized for his remarkable transition over the past three years at Eastlake.

Teachers said that, as a sophmore, Drummond was very shy and not particularly focused on academics.

Over the years, however, he has worked hard, gained confidence, and become a much more focused and motivated student.

Drummond maintained a 3.7 Grade Point Average this past semester, with a challenging course load. He plans to pursue his education at either Western Washington University or Western Ontario University in Canada.

Drummond and Hilliker will now vie for one of the five $1,000 Rotary Club of Redmond Rousers scholarships available for 2009/2010 year.

Redmond Rousers meets every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Fairwinds Retirement Center in Redmond.
