Eastside Fire and Rescue takes pride in its record of community service, and in 1999 established the “Eastside Professional Firefighter’s Scholarship” to encourage and reward those high school students who share in this effort.

The scholarship was founded and is funded by the Professional Firefighter’s Union, International Association of Firefighters Local 2878.

Each year a scholarship is given out to a high school senior from six local high schools, Issaquah High School, Liberty High School, Skyline High School, Eastlake High School, Cedarcrest High School and Mt. Si High School.

In 2005 the scholarship was expanded to include one for firefighter’s daughters or sons, to now total seven scholarship awards each year.

The scholarship is awarded based on the applicant’s community service activities.

Students were selected after a careful review of transcripts, letters of recommendation, and an essay based on their community involvement.

This is the ten year anniversary for the scholarship and since the inception of the program more than $30,000 has been awarded in scholarship money to local students.

And the winners are…

It is with distinct pleasure that Eastside Fire and Rescue announces the 2009 scholarship recipients:

Deven Tokuno – Issaquah High School

Andrew Pittman – Liberty High School

Ryan Somers – Skyline High School

Max Sussman – Eastlake High School

Sara Houser – Cedarcrest High School

Natalie Reynolds – Mt. Si High School

Kelsey Jarvis – Arlington High School (Family Member Recipient)

All of these recipients demonstrated that they have a true passion and desire to make a positive difference in their community.

The Reporter joins Eastside Fire and Rescue in congratulating them and wishing them much success with their future educational pursuits.
