An elderly Sammamish couple called police April 13 after discovering they were scammed out of nearly $90,000 by a man claiming to be their grandson.

An elderly Sammamish couple called police April 13 after discovering they were scammed out of nearly $90,000 by a man claiming to be their grandson.

The man called on three separate occasions in early April, requesting money be wired to him after he was in a terrible car accident in Georgia. The final request was for $77,500 for bail. The couple sent all three payments.

The Sammamish residents said the man on the other end sounded exactly like their grandson and that he requested they not say anything to parents for fear of getting in trouble. They didn’t discover they’d actually been scammed until their actual grandson called them April 13, asking if they wanted him to mow their yard. The case was sent to the Seattle FBI office for further investigation.

ROOF TOP RUCKUS

Police arrived at Sunny Hills Elementary on April 10 to find five teenagers skateboarding on the roof of the school. All five males, including another on the ground, were presented with trespass warning letters.

COLD HEARTED

A mother contacted Eastlake High School officials in early March after her son, a special needs student, returned home without his Apple iPad 2 — a device the student relied upon to communicate with others.

Upon investigation, it appeared someone took the device from the student’s storage area during the school day. The case was forwarded to Sammamish detectives on April 11 for further review.

CAUGHT IN THE ACT

A Sammamish homeowner called police April 10 after her son discovered a landscaper trying crawl through a bedroom window into her home. The woman said her son had just taken a shower and came downstairs to find the man entering his bedroom in the 2600 block of 239th Avenue Southeast. The landscaper and two coworkers were questioned by police. They denied any wrong-doing. The case remains open, pending fingerprint results.

ROGUE TREE TOPPER

Sammamish police were dispatched April 9 when a caller reported someone across the cul-de-sac was illegally topping trees in the center island of their neighborhood. The land in the 22900 block of Northeast 24 Place is owned by the city of Sammamish. The man topped two trees. Police forwarded the case to the city for a determination as to whether there will be any fines or penalties.

COMPUTER THEIF

A Sammamish woman called police April 13 after discovering someone broke into her home and stole a personal computer and a laptop, valued at more than $1,300. The burglars entered the home in the 100 block of Louis Thompson Road Northeast via the back door to the garage. They pried the door open with a tool, breaking the door.

HOME RANSACKED

Neighbors called police April 13, reporting someone had broken into the house next door in the 200 block of 221 Avenue Northeast. When police arrived they discovered the living room window was shattered and the master bedroom had been ransacked. The burglars made off with more than $2,500 in items including a diamond ring and a 12-place setting valued at combined $2,000.
