Despite the wild weather — dads, families, and car lovers in general came out Sunday, Father’s Day, to admire the hot rods and other cars at Fenders on Front Street.
Cars lined Front Street for close-up viewing, some with the hoods up so as to admire the shiny engines. But to do so, viewers had to deal with sun, rain, sun, rain, repeat. And when it rained, it poured and people ducked for cover.
Jim Kruse of Sammamish was proudly showing his 1965 Corvette Sting-Ray. The seats and door panels were original and in immaculate condition, but he had put in new carpet and rebuilt the engine.
“I’ve gone 75 (mph) — that’s as fast as I’ve gone,” he said when asked how fast it goes. He said he doesn’t take it out often but he drove to Anacortes the previous weekend.
Chris Petersen of Camano Island was showing his 1929 Dodge Brothers. He said he and his family found it in a barn in upstate New York, where he is from originally.
“It still has a lot of this and that to do — our entire family restored it,” he said. Most of the interior was original. He said the family brought it out west in 2010 and this was the first time it had been out of the garage in two years.
As the rain poured, Glen Jewett sought protection under his large umbrella, while he showed his 1966 Morgan, a wood frame British car. He said he doesn’t take it out much anymore.
In the muscle car world, and there were many represented. Lori and George Tyler of Renton brought their 1997 Viper GTS, which they bought in 1999. Lori smiled brightly as she started it up for the cruise.
Stan and Pam Pauley outdid themselves to set the scene for their 1955 Chevy Bel-Air. Stan said it was like his high-school hot rod. The couple bought the bright red and white car eight years ago.
“It had the upholstery I wanted, but we had to rebuild the engine,” Stan said.
The couple had it all decked out with an old-fashioned drive in tray in the window of the driver’s side with a milkshake and sundae on the tray, pompoms and stuffed animals in the backseat, harkening back to a more innocent time.
Stan and Pam Pauley of Woodinville set up the drive-in burger joint scene on their 1955 Chevy Bel-Air.
Stan and Pam Pauley of Woodinville really tricked out this 1955 Chevy Bel-Air. He said it was a remake of his high school hot rod.
Lori Tyler smiles as she gets ready to pull out in the 1997 Viper GTS that she owns with her husband, George.
