Firefighters prepare for season of water rescues

Just weeks before Memorial Day, which has been marked over the years by river drownings, Eastside Fire and Rescue technicians were out in the frigid waters practicing their swift water skills.

About 25 firefighters completed training on the Snoqualmie River, where they learned everything from how to use pulleys to carry someone across a river to how to navigate the waters. The training had firefighters take an exhilarating swim and float down rapids.

The training also allows emergency responders to practice using tools and techniques in real time scenarios.

In the summer months EF&R responds to higher numbers of water rescues, many of which end up in tragedy. Strong currents, cold water temperatures and hidden debris prove to be dangerous to swimmers and boaters.
