Former Sammamish mayor files for council seat No. 2

After a four-year break, former mayor and two-term councilmember Mark Cross said he’s ready to rejoin the Sammamish City Council. He filed for position No. 2 May 11.

Incumbent councilmember Nancy Whitten said earlier this month that she will not seek re-election. Sammamish resident Christie Malchow announced in April her intent to run; she filed for position No. 2, also.

Cross did not seek re-election in 2011 in order to focus on the new position he took with the city of Bellevue and to spend time with his family.

He was first elected to city council in 2004, and focused initially on the East Lake Sammamish Trail, partnering with the school districts to open the sports fields and opening Ebright Creek Park.

He said he’s ready to get back to city hall, as his experience as an urban planner would benefit the issues expected to come before the council in 2016.

“With growth happening how it is,” he said, “a lot of the things that bring people to Sammamish are at threat.”

Since 1987, Cross has lived in Sammamish with his wife and children, now grown.

Incumbents Mayor Tom Vance, position No. 6, and councilmember Ramiro Valderrama-Aramayo, position No. 4, have both filed.

Tom Hornish and Arul Menezes filed against Vance, but Menezes withdrew to support Hornish. Hornish is the president of Sammamish Home Owners Inc., a residential group that recently filed suit against King County regarding the East Lake Sammamish Trial in February.

Hank Klein, parks commissioner whose term ends in January 2016, filed against Valderrama-Aramyo.

Filing ended Friday at 4:30 p.m.
