Feb. 12 “Captain Blood” (1935)

In his first leading role, Errol Flynn shot to stardom in this adventure about doctor Peter Blood (Flynn), who treats the wrong patient and is forced to work as a slave on Col. Bishop’s (Lionel Atwill) Jamaican plantation. Blood joins up with marauding Spanish pirates, saves Bishop’s gorgeous niece (Olivia de Havilland) from a French pirate (Basil Rathbone) and is eventually made governor of Jamaica.

March 12 “The Last Time I Saw Paris” (1954)

After journalist Charles (Van Johnson) marries Helen (Elizabeth Taylor) in Paris, he supports her with a low-level reporting job while writing a novel at night. But frequent rejections discourage him, and he gives up his creative passion. An oil-well investment allows Charles to live a luxurious lifestyle, but his newfound attitude creates tension in the marriage in this loose adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “Babylon Revisited.”

April 9 “Phantom of the Opera” (1943)

In this 1943 remake of the silent horror film, violinist Erik Claudin (Claude Rains) worships soprano Christine Dubois (Susanna Foster) from afar and secretly aids her career. Believing a music publisher has stolen his concerto, Claudin kills him and is disfigured by acid in the process. He takes refuge in the Paris Opera House, where his shadowy figure terrorizes the theater company. This classic film won an Oscar for Best Cinematography.
