Issaquah’s own contemporary “Glee”-style gospel choir, Common Ground Choir, led by Dan Hegelund, has been invited to perform at this year’s Northwest Folklife Festival.

Hegelund moved to Issaquah from Sweden last year, and his wife and two kids joined him after some green card delays. Now the Hegelund family is reunited and are enjoying their new home in Issaquah. Hegelund opened Common Ground Choir Academy on Gilman Boulevard last September.

ow six months later the music school has private students, three contemporary children choirs and a contemporary adult choir. At the festival, the children’s choir will be performing songs like “Let It Go” (Frozen), and “Just Stand Up” (Mariah, Beyonce, Rihanna, etc.), while the adult choir will be performing songs like “Somebody To Love” (Queen) and “I See Fire” (Ed Sheeran).

This summer Hegelund will offer three free choir workshops in Issaquah on June 3, July 1 and Aug. 5. For kids, ages 6-14, the workshops last from 5-6 p.m. For youths/adults, ages 15 and above, the workshops last from 7-8:30 p.m.

Common Ground Choir Academy is located at 160 N.W. Gilman Blvd, Suite D.
