The Issaquah Community Network has awarded nine grants totaling nearly $6,600 to support classroom lessons, school activities and community efforts to promote healthy youth and families. Awards were made at the regular Issaquah Community Network board meeting held Monday at the Issaquah School District administration building.
“We were thrilled with the number and quality of grants submitted this year,” said Judy Brewer, Network board chair. “Our grant recipients are making a positive difference in the lives of youth and family in our community, and we are very pleased to help support their efforts.”
Brewer noted that a small amount of additional grant funds may be awarded during the 2010-2011 school year.
Award recipients are:
Lori Kasemeier, “Teaching Life Skills Curriculum in 7th grade health classes; $583.20. Funds will purchase 90 student guides for the Life Skills Curriculum taught at Pacific Cascade Middle School.
Lori Kasemeier, “WEB (Where Everyone Belongs),” $1,500. Funds will train 8th graders at Pacific Cascade Middle School to mentor entering 6th grade students.
Barbara Luniuck-Rakita, “Guiding Good Choices – Staying Connected to Your Teen,” $700. Funds help Friends of Youth parent education classes.
Christy Otley, “Home and School – A Critical Partnership,” $300. Funds will help Grand Ridge Elementary School establish a parent lending library.
Dianne Bugge, “Mock Crash,” $1,350. Funds will help the Issaquah High School PTSA present a mock car crash in partnership with local area police, fire and emergency personnel.
Ed Marcoe, “After School Artist in Residence Program,” $900. Funds will support eight after-school art classes for students at Tiger Mountain Community High School. Local professional artists will present lessons.
Ed Marcoe, “Healthy Teens,” $525. Funds will purchase HELP booklets from the Washington Youth Suicide Prevention Program and support a half-day Tiger Mountain Community High School student workshop focusing on issues such as youth depression and mental health.
Ed Marcoe, “Cooking Connections” $400. Funds will support a cooking and healthy nutrition program for the Issaquah Skills Enhancement Program (STEP) students enrolled at Tiger Mountain Community High School.
