Issaquah Mayor Ava Frisinger was honored as “Member Emeritus” during the November 2013 Sound Cities Association (SCA) annual meeting and dinner.

Member Emeritus is the highest honor that can be given to an SCA Member.

“It is hard to imagine Issaquah, or this region, without Ava Frisinger as mayor,” said Denis Law, association president and Renton mayor. “Mayor Frisinger provided outstanding leadership and distinguished service to the region and SCA. We can think of no one more deserving of the honor of Member Emeritus of SCA.”

According to Law, this award is given rarely, and only to those who have provided exceptional service to SCA. The association represents 35 cities in King County, Washington and provides a regional voice for nearly one million people.

Frisinger has served as mayor of Issaquah from 1998 through 2013. She did not seek re-election.

She served on the SCA board from 2002-2004 and from 2006-2009. She served as president of the organization in 2008. During her time, she served as a public issues committee member (2005-2007); alternate (2008-2010); SCA education committee – now events committee – (2006-2007 and 2010-2011); regional policy committee member (1998-2002 and 2008-2010); alternate (2003, 2005-2007); joint recommendations committee member (1999-2001, 2004-2013); regional law safety and justice committee member (1999); board of health alternate (1999-2001), member (2004-2013); and ad hoc committee for ESA ILA member in 2000.

SCA “Member Emeritus” is conferred by the board of directors on individuals meeting the following criteria:

  • The individual must be retiring from his/her elected position with an SCA member city
  • The individual must have provided distinguished service on behalf of suburban cities in King County
  • The individual must have served as an elected official of a member city for a minimum of eight years and
  • The individual must have actively participated in SCA as evidenced by service on the SCA board or an SCA committee or task force for a minimum of two years.

SCA (formerly the Suburban Cities Association) was founded in the 1970s to help cities in King County act locally and partner regionally to create vital, livable communities through advocacy, education, leadership, mutual support and networking.
