Issaquah Mayor Fred Butler has been hospitalized after suffering a heart attack, Issaquah spokespeople confirmed Tuesday.

Butler was taken to Swedish Issaquah Sunday night for reasons that were not initially publicized. He was scheduled to be reexamined Monday and has remained in stable condition since his admittance, spokespeople said.

“Our dedicated council and staff are here to keep the city running while Fred focuses on his recovery,” City Administrator Bob Harrison said. “We are very grateful for the community’s outpouring of support.”

Council President Stacy Goodman is serving as acting mayor during Butler’s hospitalization.

“We, as a community, look forward to his speedy recovery,” Goodman said Monday night. “As council members, we are here to help in any way we can during this time. We hope to have more information to share with the community very soon. In the meantime, we send our thoughts and well wishes to the mayor and his family.”

City policy allows Goodman to retain her voting powers as a member of City Council while she operates as a city executive.
