The Issaquah School District announced on Tuesday that Superintendent Ron Thiele has put out a proposal for new school start and end times, which would go into effect at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.

The Issaquah School District announced on Tuesday that Superintendent Ron Thiele has put out a proposal for new school start and end times, which would go into effect at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.

According to Thiele’s proposal, the high schools would begin classes at 8 a.m. and end at 2:52 p.m., and the middle schools would go from 8:10 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. For all elementary schools except Grand Ridge Elementary, the school day would run from 9:10 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. Grand Ridge Elementary School would have classes from 8:55 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.

Currently, the regular school day for Issaquah, Skyline and Liberty high schools lasts from 7:25 a.m. to 2:16 p.m., and the school day at the district’s middle schools lasts from 7:40 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. The elementary schools go from 8:30 a.m. to 2:55 p.m., or from 9:15 a.m. to 3:40 p.m., depending on the school.

Thiele’s proposal takes into account the public comments received from parents, staff and students at the series of meetings held in the spring, as well as through the district’s online Thought Exchange.

A final two-week public comment period will last through Monday, Nov. 7. During this time, citizens are encouraged to email their comments to BellTimes@issaquah.wednet.edu.

The discussion of implementing later school start times in the district has been going on since 2014, when the American Academy of Pediatrics released a study recommending that middle and high schools start after 8:30 a.m. to allow teenagers a healthy amount of sleep.

According to the study, teenage students who get too little sleep are more likely to perform poorly in school, suffer from obesity and eating disorders, not exercise and consume alcohol and drugs.
