A 53-year-old Maple Valley man was killed in a head-on crash after an erratic driver evading police struck the victim’s vehicle on Tuesday morning near Issaquah.

The 27-year-old Tacoma man, who had an infant in his car, fought police before he was arrested following the crash.

The incident started when the suspect drove a black Kia erratically past a King County sheriff’s deputy before 5:45 a.m. on State Route 18, according to King County Sgt. Jason Houck. The deputy attempted to pull the driver over, however, the suspect continued speeding. The officer pursued the suspect for about a minute, before a sergeant terminated the pursuit.

Minutes later, citizens observed a head-on crash at Issaquah Hobart Road. When police arrived, officers realized one of the cars involved was the suspect vehicle, which crossed the center line while it was traveling southbound and struck a vehicle.

Police shocked the uncooperative Tacoma man with a Taser and arrested him. They also found an infant in a car seat in the Kia. Both the suspect and infant were taken to Valley Medical Center with no visible serious injuries, Houck said.

The Maple Valley man died at the scene. King County medical examiners identified the man as Michael Brooks.

The suspect was booked into Kent jail, pending potential vehicular homicide charges. Police are unsure whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash and the results of a blood-alcohol test are also pending, Houck added.

The relationship between the suspect and the infant was also uncertain during the preliminary investigation, police said.
