Millions exposed in Premera health insurance hack

The Premera Blue Cross data breach may have impacted more than 10 million Washington, Oregon and Alaska current and past customers when hackers gained access to health profiles, dating back to 2002.

A Pacific Northwest insurer announced this week that a 2014 cyberattack exposed millions of consumer’s information.

The Premera Blue Cross data breach may have impacted more than 10 million Washington, Oregon and Alaska current and past customers when hackers gained access to health profiles, dating back to 2002.

They included Social Security numbers, birthdays, emails, addresses, bank account information, clinical information and detailed insurance claims.

The company thinks it was originally infiltrated on May 5, 2014, but it did not discover the breach until Jan. 29. The source of the attack is not yet known.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is working with Mandiant, a cybersecurity firm, to find out more about the attack and who was behind it.

The breach affected Premera Blue Cross, Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska, and its affiliated companies, Vivacity and Connexion Insurance Solutions, Inc.

The company is offering two years of credit monitoring to all customers, ID theft restoration services and ID insurance through Experian.
