The Issaquah School District’s (ISD) newest school, which up until now has been known as E-15, now has a name – Creekside Elementary.

On Wednesday night the district board chose “Creekside” as the winner of a competition to name the new school, beating a short list of contenders which included Ebright Creek, Lake Vista, Opportunity and Samena.

According to Link text Creekside Elementary Principal Robin Earl, the name was chosen partly due to its historical significance.

“The creek was once part of the Snoqualmie Tribe’s summer lands. Using an unspecified creek name honors both the present and past cultures who lived by and fished in the creek before it received its current name,” she wrote in an e-mail to parents Wednesday morning.

Creekside Elementary will be located on the Sammamish plateau, and will be the district’s 15th elementary school.

It will open its doors to students, staff, parents, and the community in the fall of 2010.

The 2-story building will include 28 classrooms, a computer lab, music room, multi-purpose room, gym and resource room with OT/PT room for special services. The classroom wings are organized around a central library.

There will be two covered play areas in addition to a typical elementary sand playfield.

Last week the school started interviews for the Core Team parent members, and will announce those team members as soon as interviews are over and decisions have been made, sometime around Dec. 16.

Earl wrote that the school had also held initial meetings with the District PTSA Council on how to start their own PTA.

Information on how to participate on the Creekside Elementary PTA Steering Committee will be made available in mid-January.

Once the Steering Committee is selected, they will begin the chartering process and the steps necessary to create a local unit.
