Dozens of power outages and heavy rain across the area Tuesday night and Wednesday kept residents and students in the dark in local schools and cancelled some after-school events.

The National Weather Service says the rain and wind, which began Tuesday, will continue through the work week in the Puget Sound and a chance of snow in the mountain passes.

According to Puget Sound Energy Abigail Elliott, a power outage affected the Sammamish Plateau area for several hours after a tree limb snapped power lines around 9:45 a.m. Around 124 Puget Sound Energy customers lost power.

Issaquah School District also reported a number of power disruptions during the school day, with Discovery Elementary School in Sammamish sitting in the dark for over two hours.

“It wasn’t too significant but it’s always exciting for the kids when that happens,” said Issaquah School District spokesperson Sara Niegowski.

Children were kept in their classes until power was restored. Because the district doesn’t send children home except under exceptional circumstances, Niegowski said it’s important that parents keep schools updated with current emergency contact information.

Endeavour, Tiger Mountain Community High, Maywood Middle, Briarwood and Liberty High School suffered minor outages.

About 5,000 Puget Sound Energy customers from Issaquah to Enumclaw were also affected from storms the previous evening.
