Kaitlyn Kamstra from Eastlake High School has been awarded the fifth Cory O’Brien Memorial Scholarship.

Kaitlyn Kamstra from Eastlake High School has been awarded the fifth Cory O’Brien Memorial Scholarship.

According to Tom O’Brien of the Cory O’Brien Memorial Scholarship fund, during her high school years Kaitlyn not only excelled in the classroom by challenging herself with Advanced Placement classes, but volunteered in the community as an example of “living life to its fullest.”

As a certified referee for women’s lacrosse and soccer she balanced a busy schedule of academics while also playing on the Eastlake High School softball team.

Kaitlyn recognized the importance of giving back to the community while still in junior high school.

After moving on to Eastlake she volunteered her time for the next three years assisting the girls softball program at Inglewood Junior High.

It is rare for a student to make this type of commitment, but Kaitlyn rarely missed a practice and provided an example of what can be achieved on the sports field as well as the classroom.

Kaitlyn will be enrolling at Washington State University in the fall and plans to major in veterinary medicine.

The Cory O’Brien Memorial Scholarship was established in 2004.

Cory was a graduate of Eastlake High School class of 2002 and passed away unexpectedly in August 2004 from a rare form of viral pneumonia.

Each year an $8,000 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior at Eastlake High School who has demonstrated the spirit of “living life to its fullest.”
