Sammamish ranks lower than Bellevue and Redmond’s recycling rates, but breaks even with the county’s average, according to King County 2014 data.

King County’s recycling average is 57 percent. The average county customer, excluding Seattle, tosses 24 pounds of garbage out each week.

Sammamish residents get rid of an average of 26 pounds of garbage each week. Issaquah, trailing behind Sammamish, has a recycling rate of 56 percent and tosses 21 pounds of garbage per customer each week.

The county’s target recycling rate is 70 percent by 2020, which is key in preserving the life of the Cedar Hills Landfill. Sammamish, like many King County cities, dispose its garbage in the landfill.

Cedar Hills, which is forecasted to hit its limit in 15 years, is the most cost-efficient means of disposing garbage.
