Sammamish’s proposed recreational marijuana ordinance would prohibit businesses related to the industry, but would not restrict marijuana’s use.

The ordinance was read before the Sammamish City Council for the first time during their regular council meeting Sept. 16 at Sammamish City Hall.

As written, the ordinance would also enforce preexisting restrictions on medical marijuana facilities. It does, however, also include language allowing for businesses in certain areas of the city should the courts rule in favor of marijuana processors and distributors in several legal challenges statewide. Pierce County judge Ron Culpepper ruled that cities have the right to ban marijuana-based businesses under the legalization law, collectively known as I-502, in an Aug. 29 ruling. However several groups are challenging the ruling.

The next reading will be held during the Sammamish City Council meeting Oct. 21.

In other business, city officials also approved a contract for environmental monitoring of Ebright Creek and surrounding wetlands as it empties into Pine Lake, paying special attention to water clarity, pH levels and phosphorous levels.

The council will hold its next public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7.
