Sammamish, Eastside businesses participate in Diaper Derby | Ends June 10

Eastside Baby Corner's Diaper Derby is in its second year. Last year, participants collected about 35,000 diapers.

Did you catch that video of Sammamish Mayor Don Gerend in a diaper?

If not, no worries. It’s on YouTube.

It was part of the Sammamish City Council’s efforts to engage the community in a “bottoms-up competition” for Eastside Baby Corner’s 2016 Diaper Derby, Gerend said. The competition ends June 10.

Eastside Baby Corner, founded in 1990, serves families in poverty or crisis by providing baby food, formula, diapers, cribs and car seats, according to its website.

Last year, the all-volunteer organization distributed 860,000 diapers, of which 35,000 were collected during the annual diaper derby, Eastside Baby Corner communications specialist Stephanie Zurn said.

Along with the city of Sammamish, more than 20 local businesses, including 13 Issaquah locations, are collecting diapers for the derby.

“In order to make this a success, we’ll need your help,” Sammamish City Councilmember Christie Malchow said.

The most needed items are pull-ups, overnight diapers and diapers sizes 5 and 6, Zurn said.
