The City of Sammamish will receive a grant of more than $1 million to be used in the construction of sidewalks and bicycle facilities along Southeast 20th Street.

The grant for what the city refers to as “non-motorized improvements” comes from a State of Washington Public Works Board fund of $9.5 million to encourage projects which decrease the per capita vehicle miles driven in the community by increasing access to mass transit, supporting residential density in proximity to employment opportunities, and improving the safety and appeal of walking and biking in a community.

The total cost of the project is expected to be almost $3.5 million, with the remainder of the money coming from the city’s Transportation Capital Improvement Fund.

The city received notice of the successful grant application in October of 2009, and the amount has already been budgeted into 2010 revenues and expenditures.
