Schools seek public input at Aug. 10 budget meeting

Members of the Lake Washington School District board of directors will learn more about the district’s proposed budget for the upcoming school year during a presentation on Aug. 10.

The board will also hear public comment on the challenging budget for the 2009-10 school year.

The district gathered information throughout the school year about the budgeting issues through surveys and public meetings — and has described the information as “invaluable.”

The proposed budget includes $6 million coming to the district from the Federal Stimulus program. While Lake Washington schools is getting a sizable amount from the federal government, the district is getting less money from the state. The district is budgeting less for transportation, a decrease of 2.67 percent, as well as 9.49 percent less for vocational programs in the district.

The directors welcome comments on the proposed budget, which can be sent by e-mail to publiccomments@lwsd.og or by mail to the district at P.O. Box 97039, Redmond, Wa 98073.

Comments submitted will be shared with the superintendent and school board prior to the public hearing on Aug. 10. A copy of the proposed budget can be viewed on the district’s Web site at www.lwsd.org.
