Student-athletes commended in Rotary Student of the Month awards

The Rotary Club of Issaquah honored four high school seniors with Student of the Month honors during their March 23 meeting at Tibbetts Creek Manor.

Liberty High School pre-vocational student Abram Girgis earned the award along with two football stars, Liberty High School Safety Marcell Bell and Issaquah High School defensive lineman Greg Finch. Tiger Mountain Community High School student Zach Gatrel was also recognized but was unable to attend.

Issaquah Rotary and the three respective schools selected the four local high school seniors based on their leadership in the school and classroom, contributions to the student body or community, and their academic or scholastic goals.

Liberty P.E. teacher and softball coach Brian Hartman said Bell’s story was a true-turnaround story that the school was proud of. After struggling with peer pressure and poor grades, Bell became a leader who students could look up to.

“It’s just like the Pied Piper. People just want to follow him,” Hartman said.
