WSP investigates fatal wrong direction crash

The driver who traveled the wrong direction on SR 18 is under investigation for vehicular homicide.

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is investigating a fatal crash on State Route 18 south of Issaquah after a driver was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes.

WSP responded to reports of a serious collision around 9:46 p.m. on Aug. 5 and arrived to discover a fatal accident near Issaquah/Hobart Road. According to reports from troopers, a silver 2008 Honda Pilot struck a 2003 Acura TL head on, spinning the Honda on top of the concrete median.

The 50-year-old male driver of the Acura was pronounced dead on the scene and the 68-year-old male driver of the Honda was transported to Overlake Hospital.

Currently, the surviving driver is in custody and being investigated for vehicular homicide because he was traveling the wrong direction on the freeway. The collision is still under investigation.

“I’m looking for those that may have seen, passed or swerved to avoid the vehicle driving the wrong way,” said WSP detective Ruth Medeiros.

This is the fourth fatal crash on SR-8 this year and the fourth that involved a driver traveling in the wrong direction, according to the Washington Crash Data Portal. SR-18 has been the location for four of the 31 fatal wrong direction crashes in Washington this year, the highest concentration for a single road.

WSP detectives are seeking out any witnesses who may have seen the Honda prior to the collision or witnessed the accident. Any locals with more information can contact Medeiros at (425) 401-7719 or by email at Ruth.Medeiros@wsp.wa.gov.
