Through the county’s Be Flood Ready campaign, residents are eligible for — and encouraged to pick up — free sandbag materials to protect their homes, properties and businesses and are encouraged to seek them out as increased rain and flood alerts ring out through the area.
Residents living close to areas along the Cedar, Green, Duwamish, Snoqualmie and Tolt rivers are most at-risk for flooding.
“As we enter flood season, we encourage residents, especially those living or working near the Duwamish River, to prepare ahead of time,” said King County Flood Control District (KCFCD) Supervisor Teresa Mosqueda. “When rain events coincide with King Tides, flood risk can rise quickly. Taking advantage of the free sandbag program now is a simple, effective way to protect your property.”
King tides are described as “exceptionally high tides” and for the next few months, they are expected to occur Nov. 7-9, Dec. 6-9 and Jan. 4-6, 2026.
According to KCFCD, the highest flood risks throughout King County happen between October in April, with flood risks increasing in areas along the Duwamish River due to the combination of heavy rain and high tides.
