Issaquah hoops team dominates Skyline

The Issaquah Eagles boys basketball team cruised to a 64-45 win against the Skyline Spartans on Jan. 8

Eagles girls basketball team defeats Eastlake

The Issaquah Eagles girls basketball team earned a 64-53 win against the rival Eastlake Wolves on Jan. 22. Eagles’ sharpshooter Mariah Van Halm scored a team-high 19 points in the victory.

FEBRUARY

Issaquah wrestling team wins KingCo tournament

The Issaquah Eagles wrestling team nabbed first place at the Class 4A KingCo tournament, compiling 209 team points on Feb. 6. Mount Si captured second place with 186 points.

Moorehouse wins state wrestling title

Issaquah Eagles senior wrestler Kacie Moorehouse captured a state title in the girls tournament at the Mat Classic state wrestling tournament in the 170-pound weight class. Moorehouse pinned Washougal’s Abby Lees in the third round with her favorite move, the lateral drop.

Skyline, Mercer Island soccer teams battle to a draw

The season-opening battle between the Skyline Spartans and Mercer Island boys soccer teams ended in a stalemate. The teams battled to a 0-0 draw on March 14 at Mercer Island High School.

Baklenko hired as Crusaders new girls volleyball coach

Former University of San Diego volleyball star Jen Baklenko was hired as the Eastside Catholic Crusaders volleyball team’s new head coach on March 10.

“We are very excited to have Jen Baklenko on board with us at Eastside Catholic,” Athletic Director Jeremy Thielbahr said in a press release. “She brings with her extensive coaching and playing experience that we know will help take our volleyball program to the highest level.”

APRIL

Skyline defeats Issaquah in diamond showdown

Skyline pitcher Connor Knutson allowed just one hit in seven innings of work on the hill, propelling Skyline to a 2-1 win against the Issaquah Eagles on April 8. Skyline improved their overall record to 7-3 with the win.

“Connor is a gamer. It doesn’t matter what position it is on the field. He gets the job done and he is a competitor,” Skyline head coach Brandon Hemphill said.

Swanson homer lifts Skyline to dramatic victory

With two outs and the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Skyline sophomore softball player Shayna Swanson connected on a solo home run to left field off of Inglemoor ace pitcher Mackenzie DeKay. The blast gave the Spartans a 2-1 win on April 11 at Skyline High School in Sammamish.

“I just wanted to crush it,” Swanson said of her approach at the plate.

MAY

Eastside Catholic girls lacrosse team wins title

The Eastside Catholic Crusaders completed a perfect 16-0 season, earning a convincing 14-4 win against Lake Sammamish in the Washington Division 1 girls lacrosse state championship game on May 20 at Bellevue Memorial Stadium. Carlin Reilly scored a game-high five goals for Eastside Catholic in the championship game.

Skyline baseball team wins Class 4A state title

The Skyline Spartans baseball squad captured the Class 4A state title courtesy of a 2-1 win against the Kentwood Conquerors on May 28 at Gesa Stadum in Pasco. The Spartans finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 20-7.

Hughes dominates the Class 4A state track meet

Skyline Spartans senior Brandi Hughes captured first place in the Class 4A 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.12 at the Class 4A state track meet on May 28 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

JUNE

Legendary golfer visits Sammamish for tournament

Annika Sorenstam, who is one of the most legendary golfers in the history of the sport, visited Sammamish from June 6 through June 12 for the 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Gold Championships at Sahalee Country Club. Sorenstam was at the tournament to work as an analyst on live TV, which aired on the Golf Channel and NBC.

Dellinger attains dream

Issaquah Eagles baseball player Jack Dellinger committed to play baseball at Purdue University on July 17.

AUGUST

Eastside Bulldogs football team looks to repeat

The Eastside Bulldogs football team, which competes in the Northwest Junior College Football League, kicked off its practices in late August in Renton. The Bulldogs set a goal in 2016 of earning back-to-back NWJCFL championships.

SEPTEMBER

Eastlake registers comeback win against Lakes

The Eastlake Wolves football team, who trailed the Lakes Lancers 21-12 at halftime of a non-league contest, earned a comeback 36-27 victory on Sept. 2 at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

OCTOBER

Eagles dominate Cougars

The Issaquah Eagles girls soccer team scored six first-half goals en route to a 7-2 victory against the Bothell Cougars on Oct. 6 at Gary Moore Stadium in Issaquah. The Eagles improved to 9-0-1 with the victory.

Eastlake conquers rival Issaquah on homecoming

The Eastlake Wolves football team registered a convincing 49-7 victory against the Issaquah Eagles on homecoming night on Oct. 21 in Sammamish.

NOVEMBER

Skyline defeats Issaquah in KingCo title game

The Skyline Spartans earned a 1-0 win against the Issaquah Eagles in the Class 4A KingCo soccer title game on Nov. 3. The outcome of the game was decided by penalty kicks after the game remained scoreless following 80 minutes of regulation and two five-minute overtime sessions. Skyline outscored Issaquah 8-7 in the penalty kick round.

Eagles win Cross Country state championship

The Issaquah Eagles girls Cross Country team won the Class 4A state championship, compiling 90 team points at the state meet in Pasco on Nov. 5. Kenna Clawson captured ninth place individually, clocking a time of 18:32.4.

Spartans earn swim title

The Skyline Spartans girls swim team nabbed first place at the Class 4A state swim and dive championships. The Spartans tallied 243 team points to clinch the title. Skyline swimmer Christina Bradley was thrilled her team won the team title.

“We were uncertain going into state. I think now, it hit us and is amazing,” Bradley said.

Skyline girls soccer team captures third place

The Skyline Spartans girls soccer team earned a 2-0 win against the Hanford Falcons in the Class 4A third/fourth place game on Nov. 19 at Sparks Stadium in downtown Puyallup. The Spartans finished the season with an overall record of 15-1-4.

DECEMBER

Davis leads Eagles to early season victory

Issaquah Eagles senior basketball player Tanner Davis scored a game-high 37 points in his team’s 74-63 win against the Woodinville Falcons on Dec. 12 in Issaquah.

“We knew this was a pivotal win to get. The team needed me to have a big game. My teammates were just getting me open and making plays,” Davis said.
