The Eastside Catholic football team hasn’t only had an impressive season on the field, but off the field.

The Crusaders, who enter the playoffs Friday against Oak Harbor, were recently named 2011 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Academic Champions for the 3A classification.

“We’re extremely excited about winning the state championship in academics for 3A football,” head coach Jeremy Thielbahr said. “I think it just shows a great culture and we’re going to build upon if for years to come.”

Of its 52 returning varsity players, Eastside Catholic maintained a 3.510 GPA throughout the season.

The Crusaders are 6-3 headed into their state-qualifying game this week.

Ferris High School of Spokane claimed the 4A title with a collective 3.268 GPA, while Quincy High School won the 2A title with a 3.390 GPA.
