Issaquah grad Curtis gets the call from the Yankees

Issaquah graduate Colin Curtis has received his first call to the big show.

Issaquah graduate Colin Curtis has received his first call to the big show.

The 2003 IHS graduate and former Arizona State University player, got called up by the New York Yankees on Monday afternoon to provide a left-handed hitter to the lineup and depth to the outfield during interleague play.

“He was pretty excited, he called me when he first got called up,” said former high school coach Rob Reese, noting he’s received non-stop phone calls, texts and emails.

Curtis received one pinch-hit at bat in the fifth inning off of Arizona Diamondback starter Rodrigo Lopez, but flew out to centerfield. On Tuesday, he earned his first Major League hit in another pinch-hit at-bat, driving in two runs on a double to centerfield.

Curtis was hitting .280 (35-for-125) at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with 11 doubles and 12 RBI in 35 games. He was batting .316 (12-for-38) against left-handed pitchers.

“He’s just an awesome, awesome centerfielder and one of the best hitters Issaquah has ever seen,” Reese said.

Reese, who is in San Diego with the Lakeside Senior Legion team, plans on making the trip up to Los Angeles on Saturday to watch Curtis play against the Dodgers.

Curtis was a fourth-round draft pick by the Yankees in 2006. He has played in 466 minor league games, without any Major League experience.

If Curtis stays with the big league club, he will return to Seattle July 8-11 when the Yankees face the Mariners in a four-game series.
