Issaquah lacrosse drops 2-OT match to Rutgers Prep | Wednesday prep roundup

Issaquah held its own Wednesday during the first match of its East Coast swing, falling in double overtime, 10-9, to Rutgers Prep in Somerset, N.J.

Issaquah held its own Wednesday during the first match of its East Coast swing, falling in double overtime, 10-9, to Rutgers Prep in Somerset, N.J.

Ben Director sent the game to extra time, firing in a loose ball in front of the Rutgers Prep cage with 10 seconds left in regulation.

“I’m super proud of the kids for the way they battled,” said Issaquah head coach Brandon Fortier, in a Washington State Lacrosse press release. “I didn’t want to use the excuse of getting off plane and being tired. We battled and put ourselves in a position to win it. It just didn’t go our way.”

The Eagles outscored the Argonauts 3–1 in the first quarter before Rutgers Prep scored five goals in the second for a 6–4 halftime lead

“Rutgers Prep dominated possession in the second,” Fortier said.  “We shouldn’t have been in it in the first, but our defensive play was outstanding to keep us in it.”

Issaquah came into its own in the third quarter, netting four goals to take an 8–7 lead into the final quarter.

Issaquah had two opportunities to win the game in the first OT, but the Rutgers Prep goaltender kick-saved a Kevin Powers shot early in the period and Director was unable to convert another try in the final minutes.

With just 1:15 remaining in the second OT, Rutgers Prep midfielder Steven Polansky recorded the game winner.

“One of the reasons to come out here was to gain this experience,” Fortier said.  “We are playing a good brand of lacrosse out west and can battle with these guys,” he said.  “We are just as athletic.  It’s a great experience for the kids and see that we can compete at this level.”

Powers, O’Neill, Director and Jake Fritz all had two goals for the Eagles.

Issaquah (7-2-0) next faces Lawrenceville today.

Eastlake led 10–4 at the half before adding a goal in the third and five more in the fourth.

Cooper Rosenthal had three goals and two ground balls for Eastlake which improved to 3-3-1.
