Issaquah rolls over Heritage 48-0 in season opener | Football

Sure, Issaquah running back Jack Gellatly would have liked more carries in Friday's season opener.

Sure, Issaquah running back Jack Gellatly would have liked more carries in Friday’s season opener.

Then again, there’s no telling what that would have done to his stellar average.

One game into the season and the Eagles’ elusive sophomore boasts an impressive 28 yards per carry average after rushing four times for 113 yards and two touchdowns in Issaquah’s 48-0 rout of Heritage.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Gellatly, who also returned an interception 35 yards for a score. “The holes were opening up really nice. The line was on, I felt like the d-lineman were on the ground all the time.”

Gellatly put Issaquah on the board one-and-a-half minutes into the game, breaking free for a touchdown on a 19-yard counter left. He tacked on a 79-yard score on a similar counter play with 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Issaquah’s offense moved with ease the entire first half, scoring on its first four possessions. Running back Kyle Thomas added a 1-yard TD run, while quarterback Ethan Kalin (8-for-12, 125 yards) connected with Jake Bakamus on a wide receiver screen pass for a 41-yard TD.

The Eagles were also handed six points via the Timberwolves’ long-snapping problems. Heritage launched the ball over punter Houston Dillard’s head on three occasions — all resulting in safeties.

Junior returner Reed Peterson added insult to injury after the first safety returning the ensuing kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown.

The bad snaps and several negative carries left Heritage with nearly unheard of minus 53 yards in the first half. They ended the game with just 22 total yards.

Issaquah, which led 48-0 at halftime, rested its starters the entire second half. Head coach Chris Bennett was impressed with the start his team got off to.

“For our first time out it was pretty good,” he said. “Our kids do a good job of not getting too high or too low. We have another big one here next week against Liberty.”

Gellatly concurred with his coach.

“It’s definitely a confidence booster,” he said. “It’s a good way to start the season. You know, you’re always kind of unsure coming into the first game of what you got. I think we’re happy with what we did, we weren’t perfect, we made a lot of mistakes, but we got it done.”

The Eagles ended the game with 339 yards of total offense, only throwing the ball once in the second half.

Issaquah hosts Liberty next at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9.
