KingCo, Metro champs lead wrestlers to Regionals | Prep sports news

Scores, highlights and updates from the weekend's KingCo and Metro League wrestling championships.

Each of the four Issaquah-Sammamish wrestling squads saw a host of competitors get through to this weekend’s Regional round, where Mat Classic spots will be on the line, led by KingCo and Metro League champions from Skyline, Issaquah and Eastside Catholic.

Skyline freshman Zach Froeber won the 106 pound bracket for the Eagles, beating Issaquah’s William Tickman in the final.

Martin Miller was third for Eastlake and will also move to regionals.

The Spartans also got titles at 120 pounds, where junior Nathan Swanson beat Newport’s Diego Dwyer, and 132, with senior Tristan Steciw beating Bothell’s Andrew Hanson in the finals.

 

Skyline senior Kody Nguyen was the runner-up at 113 and a pair of Spartans finished fourth in Garin Swanson (138) and Joseph DeMatteo (145).

Bo Longmore was the second place finisher for Skyline at 170 and a pair of Spartans made the regionals in Henri Kunold (113) and Nate Jensen (126).

Issaquah won two conference championships and will send a host of wrestlers to regionals, as seniors Torre Eaton and Louden Ivey took the titles at 113 and 138 respectively.

Steve Solusod was third at 113 for the Eagles, with Hunter Hurley third at 152 and Colby Starren second at 160. Seth Hartman punched his regional ticket at 138 pounds, finishing fifth.

Eastlake’s Ryan Wasserman was third at 170, while teammate Jacob Kaufman was fourth and Jonnie Estrada second at 195.

Senior Rudolf Ross was fifth at 220 to earn the final regional spot in the bracket.

Issaquah coach Kirk Hyatt was named conference Coach of the Year, while the Eagles also took the dual meet title for the season.

Woodinville won the conference meet team scoring title in front of Skyline.

Pairings for Saturday’s regionals are not finalized, due to school closures in the Vancouver area.

Three from EC take Metro titles

Eastside Catholic junior Matt Iwicki won three matches by fall in the Metro League tournament, also earning Outstanding Wrestler honors for the lower weight classes and winning a Metro League title at 132 pounds.

Junior Connor Heger got in on the championship action as well, winning all three of his matches at 220 pounds to take the title. Alex Neale made it three champs for Eastside Catholic, earning three falls at 285 pounds to take the crown.

Teammate Matt Boss was third at 138, five matches for the Crusaders. Bradley Strode went 3-1 at 195 pounds for EC, finishing third.
