Eastlake senior golfer Kevin Penner competed for a berth in the U.S. Open during a 36-golfer sectional qualifier Monday at Tumble Creek Club in Roslyn.

Penner failed to qualify, shooting a 9-over par, 151 for 36 holes of golf. Nick Taylor, a junior on the University of Washington golf team, won the event with a 6-under par, 136. Andrew Parr, from Canada, took the second and final U.S. Open berth with a 4-under par, 138.

Penner, who will golf at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas next fall, finished sixth among 11 amateurs in the field. He finished in a tie for 25th overall among all 36 professionals and amateurs.

Monday’s sectional qualifier was one of 15 around the world, which qualify two golfers the opportunity to play in the U.S. Open Championship, June 19-21 at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Farmington, N.Y.
