In a battle between Class 4A KingCo soccer powerhouses, the Skyline Spartans reigned supreme against the Eastlake Wolves.

Skyline registered a convincing 3-1 victory against Eastlake on Sept. 25 at Skyline High School in Sammamish.

The Spartans (5-1-1) outshot the Wolves (4-1-1) 22-9 in the contest. Spartans’ head coach Don Braman was glad to see his team pick up an important victory in KingCo league play.

“We are now into the ones that count. It is so important to play well against your rival,” Braman said. “Eastlake is a really strong team and had a great pre-season. We just wanted to come out and play the kind of soccer that we know we can.”

Ke’ala Louie (21st minute), Candace Hunter (34th minute) and Gabby Hart (62nd minute) each scored a goal in the win for the Spartans. Spartans’ senior forward Amanda Johnston had two assists and Bianca Lindberg added an assist as well.

“We really liked that we got contributions from a lot of different players. We have such quality all over the field. Amanda Johnston created a lot of solid opportunities for us,” Braman said. “Overall I’m really pleased with the runs that we are making and the chances we are creating.”

While Braman was impressed with his team’s performance, he believes his squad has plenty of room to ascend as the season progresses.

“We just need to do a little better in the finishing department (scoring goals) so we can compete with the teams that we have to compete with in our league,” he said.

Eastlake head coach Chuck Krieble said his team gave it all they had against the Spartans. Eastlake never wavered despite trailing Skyline by three goals with 18 minutes left in regulation. The Wolves had four shots on goal in the final 15 minutes of play. Wolves’ midfielder Jodi Ulkekul scored a goal in the 76h minute.

“They know they played well. Obviously this (Skyline) is a good squad,” Krieble said. “We’re disappointed with the loss but they know they got some serious game. We’ll be ready for the next one.”
